Round 5 Winton Motor Raceway Nov 7/8
Winton 5th Round of the under 2litre Sports Sedan Championship was a great ending to the Racing year.
Barry won the Championship by winning race 2 then to make it more interesting, opted to started the next race from pit row, trailing the field into turn 1 he then set about passing everyone to win the race convincingly, a great display of driving in his self built car.
Sam Speer won the under 1600 Class showing the skills he has developed in this his first year of competitive driving, by having close dices with Steve Frawley and Steve Howard all weekend, Sam also won the Autosmart Cup kindly donated by Clive Ablitt, who tried his best to win his own Cup, but clutch problems meant he started from the back of the grid all weekend, which put paid to his chances.
Colin Laging finished his year with a well earned 3rd for the weekend with some consistent driving.
We were treated to some excellent racing, among them Shane Brown in only his second outing this year proved he still has what it takes to drive fast and performed very well all weekend, his main problem a faulty alternator causing him some grief, Craig Hill in his Vectra with some electrical gremlins started race 1 from the back of the grid and raced to a well earned Second place.
The weekend of racing saw a lot of happy competitors, Clarkey couldn’t wipe the smile off his face he was having so much fun, and was doing his best times so far, keep it up Andrew all you need now is more power.
The down side of the weekend was Mark he came up on Sunday and was happy to start at the back of the grid, but broke his diff off the line so didn’t get much value for his entry fee, Steve Howard also broke a diff during race 4 but had it repaired for the next race, which was an excellent effort by the crew.
The last race meeting of the year provided wonderful weather, a good track and some great racing by our guys and the following results for our 2009 Club Championship.

1st - Barry Megaw
2nd - Steve Howard
3rd - Alex Del Solar
1600 Class
1st - Sam Speer
2nd - Clive Ablitt
3rd - Mark DeFanis

Lets move our Club forward
At the recent Club meeting held at the Tower Hotel Hawthorn we discussed many ways of promoting our Club and in particular under 2Litre Sports Sedans, We asked the meeting to address the problem of recruiting new Members and improving the status of 2 Litre Sports sedans, to this end after a lot of discussion we came to the conclusions that as a club we should:
• Attend Sprints, with Club and Ernies Corporate Motor Sport cars, the next Meeting is Phillip Island 16th August
• Invite potential entrants to our Race meetings
• Invite interstate clubs and Drivers to our Race Meetings
• Upgrade our cars to newer models
• Attract other drivers to our ranks
• Mentor new members
• Create a Hill Climb day at Haunted Hills
• Market the Club with the highlights being the support and the camaraderie of the members not many clubs assist each other at race meetings like we do.
• In this class you build the car you really want, with fewer restrictions and controls.
• Any Members with ideas on how we can achieve these goals, feel free to contact any member of the committee with your thoughts, or log them on the Forum.
Our Guest Speaker Niel Roshier Owner/Editor/Publisher of Race Performance Magazine gave us a lot of points to consider in promoting the Club, which were gratefully received. He then went on to demonstrate “Foam Sandwich Technology” and how he uses this technique in building a rear wing also the new technologies e.g. Carbon Fibre, resins, glass mat and high density foams, and how the use of various easy to get pumps can assist in creating vacuum bagging equipment to create the wing, he emphasized that this process is easy to set up in the home garage with simple tools, so are things we could all attempt.
It was an interesting lecture and appreciated by every-one in attendance
